From time immemorial soldiers have laid down their lives many of whom have never been identified. After the First World War it was seen that most nations decided to commemorate this ultimate sacrifice with a tomb which would have the remains of an unidentified soldier.

The idea of such a tomb, it is said, first came about when Reverend David Railton who had served as a chaplain in the British Army had once come across a grave that was marked with a cross with "An Unknown British Soldier" written on it. He had later made a proposal saying that such a grave be made in Britain and be considered a national monument. France also came up with a similar idea and both countries unveiled their respective monuments on the same day.
