The Catholic University Of America

The Catholic University of America as the name suggests was set up by the Roman Catholic Church. It is a national university set up in Washington D.C. It also has the distinction of being the sole institution set up by the church for higher education. The university established itself in 1887 and was a centre for graduation and research. In 1904 after getting the nod from Pope Leo XIII, undergraduate courses were offered by the institution. Washington D.C travel should include a trip to this only institute run by the Catholic Church that offers such courses.

The university is the brainchild of Bishop John Lancaster Spalding who persuaded Pope Leo XIII to grant permission to set up the university. He was also instrumental in persuading Mary Gwendoline Caldwell, a family friend in parting with $300000 for the purpose. The university lays special emphasis on liberal arts and personal development.

The university also lays great emphasis on sports. Apart from that the university functions completely on the teachings of the Catholic Church. The resident U.S. cardinals host the American Cardinals Dinner and this works as a fund raiser for the scholarships provided at the Catholic University of America.
