The gallery holds art work that dates back to the 19th century up until the 21st century. The Renwick gallery is located in a building which is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Originally the building showcased William Wilson Corcoran's collection. The collection included both American as well as European art works. The designer of this magnificent building is James Renwick Jr and thus bears his name.

The work on the building finished in 1874 but before that it was used as a military warehouse on a temporary basis during the civil war period and later on was also home to the federal Court of Claims. In 1874 on official completion it was home to the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The gallery was well appreciated and required a larger space soon and shifted to a new location in 1897.

It was in 1965 that the building became part of the Smithsonian Institution due to an executive order passed by the then President Lyndon B. Johnson.
