Washington DC Temple

The Washington DC temple commonly known as Washington Temple was built in 1846 on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. It is the 16th operating church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a very prominent Landmark in the country and receives very large crowds each year. The church is located in Kensington, Maryland. This temple was constructed similarly to the Salt Lake temple to mark the Construction of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. The temple is the 16th in line operating temple of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints.

The temple has a strange design. If you go to the temple palace, you would find three towers located to the east of the Washington temple, and three temples located on the west of the Washington temple.

Both the eastern and the western towers have their own significance.

The eastern towers represent a particular priesthood, called Melchezedek priesthood, while the western towers belong to the Aaronic priesthood leadership.

The 16th temple of the Church of Latter-day Saints's Washington Temple foundation stone was laid in 1968 and is one of the tallest structures among the other temples of LDS. There is an eighteen foot statue of Angel Moroni weighing two tons that sits atop the tallest tower.

The site of the Washington Dc Temple is a peaceful area on a 52 acre hill surrounded with woods, and flower gardens. People can come with their families or alone to pray and also enjoy presentations and exhibits to feel the holy spirit.

There are a lot of events happening at the Washington D.C Temple for the year 2010 with the Bronze Exhibit happening in the month of July through October. There is also a Spanish Night of Music and Inspiration conducted by the North missionaries of Washington D.C.

The Washington D.C temple is also the first of the LDS to be built in the east coast and the first to feature 6 spires and its tallest tower standing at 288 feet. The temple open officially in 1974 after a 6 year construction period.

The temple is open from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm daily. Visitors are also shown movies during December free of charge. Some of these include - Restoration, Witness of Christ, Luke II, Shepherd and many more.

Although closed on Mondays, endowment sessions happen from Tuesday through Sunday every hour between 8 am to 5 pm and every half hour from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm. On Saturdays however it happens every half hour from 8 am to 8 pm.

There also are special sessions for people who understand the American Sign Language, while Korean, Mandarin and Spanish sessions are held every 3rd, 2nd Saturday and 1st Tuesday respectively at 8 pm, 3.45 pm and 7.45 pm.
