Smithsonian Institute Guide - Your DC Trip is Never Complete without Visiting the Castle

The Smithsonian Institution Building, also referred to as 'The Castle' is situated on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The castle is home to the Smithsonian Information Center and the administrative offices of the Institute. The Institute remains open from 8:30am to 5:30pm everyday. You can reach The Castle by availing the rapid transit. The original structure was constructed following the architectural patterns of the Norman using red sandstone from Seneca Creek, Maryland.

The Castle hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions. The crypt of James Smithsonian is present in the northern portion of the building. The panel exhibit will give you more details about the crypt. The exhibit panels in the West Wing of the building depict the history of this portion of the castle. The exhibits are permanent. The permanent exhibits displayed in the America's treasure Chest Room offer a glimpse of the vast array of objects housed in the institute.

First floor of the castle houses three different types of chambers with various kinds of exhibits. The Children's Room installed at the South Entrance displays objects relating to the 'Knowledge Begins in Wonder' theme. The Commons Room in the West Wing displays some of the most exclusive objects like walnut cases made in 1871. The Schermer Hall showcases precious antique pieces. The collection includes Renaissance Revival Armchairs, Roccoco gilded mirrors belonging to Simon Cameron and Georgian Revival Tables.
