
Renwick Gallery: A Place Must Not Miss On Your Washington Art Trip Schedule
Renwick Gallery is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, located in Washington DC and focuses on the American craft and decorative arts from the 19th and 21st century, and has been accredited as the National Historic Landmark building. This was built in the year 1859 on Pennsylvania Avenue that originally was the Corcoran Art Gallery.
Being the first art museum in Washington DC, also houses William Wilson Corcoran's arts collection and the name of the building was after the person who designed, James Renwick Jr. The gallery was opened in 1874 after the civil war, and was relocated to a nearby place in the year 1897 for want of space. This was renovated once more in the year 1972 and was reopened as Smithsonian American Arts Museum for contemporary craft program.
The museum still in memory of Renwick holds a gallery named Renwick Gallery that features some of the best finest American crafts collections, conducting some of the popular exhibition program enjoyed by everyone, and publications that highlights the best craft objects of the American culture and decorative arts depicting the 19th century to the current civilization of America.
Some of the popular works will include Larry Fuente's Game Fish, Wendell Castle's Ghost clock and Beth Lipman's Banquet. Contemporary arts will include art works created from clay, fiber, glass, metal and wood.
Temporary exhibitions are usually displayed in the first floor of the gallery, while special collections and paintings are exhibited in the Grand Salon.
