Located on the National mall in Washington DC, the National Gallery of Art is a national art museum. The gallery consists of two buildings, the West Building and the East Building. While the West Building features the collection of paintings and sculptures belonging to different phases from the medieval period to the 19th century, the East Building exhibits the collection of modern and contemporary art. "Snowplow Sam: Mom/Dad & Me" classes offer lessons for children as young as two and teach them skating while holding one of their parents' hand. For children with more skating experience, skating classes are also available.

"Adult Basic" group lessons are offered for teens and adults to hone their skating skills. The group lessons are created based on four levels of skating experience. The history of the National Gallery of Art started when Andrew W. Mellon started gathering a private collection of art, particularly old master paintings as well as sculptures. In the late 1920's his art collection efforts were directed towards the establishment of a US new national gallery. It was between 130 and 1931 that he got the first major art acquisition - 21 paintings that came from the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg. This collection included the Alba Madonna by Raphael and The Annunciation by Jan van Eyck.

In 1937, the formal offer for a new Gallery was made and an Act of Congress approved this by accepting the collection and building funds that have been provided through the A.W. Mellon Trust. The newly gallery became self-governing and distinct from the Smithsonian. The old name, National Gallery of Art, however, stood. More art collection donations came after that and some of the benefactors included Rush Kress, Edgar William, Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce.

A new building, opened June 1, 1978, was constructed in contemporary architecture. Internship Opportunities

The National Gallery has announced its recruitment of Graduate Interns for 2010-2011. Internships in the Museum Profession is an international program offered to students from all backgrounds as long as they have a spring 2011 undergraduate degree. Recent MA, MFA and M Arch graduates are preferred. Interns in this enrolled in this program are supposed to work closely with other professional staff of the museum. Through hands-on operations and activities, surely you'll benefit a lot form this Internship in the Museum Profession program.
