This renowned university is named after father George Mason, who was an American revolutionary and a patriot. This university is the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia enrolling over 32,500 students with its strong programs in computer science, law, creative writing and economics.

In the recent years a new academic building, Innovation Hall, Potomac Heights, Liberty Square, Sandy Creek parking deck and Research I has already been constructed. The Fairfax campus is under construction campaign (between 2002-2012) that includes a new Visual and Performing Arts building, a new Information Technology and Engineering building, a renovated Physical Education building, a new dining hall, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and a new residential building. A conference center and a new hotel along with a new residential building are also being planned to be constructed.

In George Mason University, Fairfax is the only campus which provides on-campus student housing facility. There are five housing areas, (Dominion Hall, University Commons and Commonwealth Hall), President's Park, YRC (Liberty Square and Potomac Heights) and the newest housing area Chesapeake (Tidewater, Blue Ridge, Shenandoah, Piedmont and Northern Neck).A sixth housing area is under construction.

The school's sports teams are called the Patriots. The school's colors are gold and green. The college has 2 NCAA Division I National Championship; 1985 Women's Soccer and 1996 Men's Indoor Track & Field.
