The Folger Shakespeare Library is located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C and is an independent research library, in the United States. This library has the world's largest collection of the printed works of William Shakespeare, manuscripts, Renaissance books, works of art, and is a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period.

The library serves a wide audience of visitors, researchers, students, families, concert and theater-goers. This library was established by Henry Clay Folger. The library offers various advanced scholarly programs including poetry, music, lectures, plays, exhibits, and family programs. The Trustees of Amherst College administer the library and this library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The library is an Elizabethan monument with a neoclassical exterior and was designed by architect Paul Philippe Cret. The exterior of the building is of white marble and includes nine street-level bas-reliefs of scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The interior of the building is designed in a Tudor style with elements such as ornamental floor tile, oak paneling and high plaster ceilings. There are two reading rooms which are reserved for use by scholars. Public spaces include a gift shop, a large exhibition gallery, and the Elizabethan theatre. The library collection holds many sculptures and paintings related to Shakespeare and his plays. There are around 55,000 manuscripts and more than 250,000 books, 250,000 playbills, and 50,000 works on paper (including photographs and prints).

The Folger Institute organizes symposia, academic conferences, summer institutes and seminars. Various arts and cultural programs include concerts, poetry, theater, lectures, and exhibitions.
