Complete Guide to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial - How Much You Know about the President and the Era
The only President of U.S. who got elected four times was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He sat in a wheel chair as he suffered from Polio and he is the only ever handicap President of the nation.
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial is the memorial constructed in remembrance of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the U.S President. This presidential memorial also represents the era he lived.
According to his friend Felix Frankfurter, FDR wanted his memorial to be put up in the centre of the green plot in facade of the Archives Building. Accordingly, a small and simple memorial to him was placed on the turf near the corner of 9th Street in Pennsylvania Avenue. It is located near the National Mall along the Cherry Tree Walk on the Western Edge of the Tidal Basin. It covers about 7.5 acres.
The memorial comprises 10 bronze sculptures of the President sitting with his dog Fala in a Wheel Chair, his wife Eleanor Roosevelt and that of Second World War. The stones in the memorial have the words of FDR engraved in it like "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."
It has 4 outdoor rooms each one devoted to one of the FDR's terms. Other rooms have references to the Washington Dc events that occurred during the Second World War and his sculptures inspired by his photographs. Even after 50 years of his death, his words call out from the walls of his memorial, as if he is somewhere there now. Each year over 2.8 million people are visiting this memorial.
