Was the city of Washington DC ever captured by foreign invaders

The War of 1812 - 1815 broke out in North America between the British and the American forces. The British army set foot ashore the Chesapeake Bay. Not sure of the British army's next move the clueless American militia gathered at Bladensburg, Maryland with the intention to protect their capital.

But they faced defeat and the British army set fire to the prominent public buildings including the White House. The incident is famously referred to as the 'Burning of Washington.' It occurred on August 24, 1814. The private buildings were largely left unscathed.
