According to the United States Department of Labour the basic minimum wage rate in Washington DC is $7.25 per hour effective from July 2009. This applies to those employees covered by the FLSA or the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

The Department's Wage and Hour Division was created with the enactment of the FLSA. It also states overtime pay standards. The division is responsible for the administration and enforcement of a wide range of laws which collectively cover virtually all private, State and local employments.
