Are there any Jewish and Islamic festivals held in Washington DC
Washington DC has a large Jewish and Muslim population and both celebrate their respective festivals with fervor.
The Jews celebrate Hanukkah which in Hebrew means 'to dedicate'. It is an eight days long festival commemorating the victory of the Jewish army called 'the Maccabees', over Syrian oppressors in 2nd century BC and the rededication of the temple in the holy city of Jerusalem.
Since this is a festival of lights, a Hanukkah Menorah or a set of eight candles are lit on the White House grounds. For more information about this festival log on to http://www.nationalmenorah.org/
