More about Inner Loop in Washington, DC
The inner loop is a planned freeway situated around downtown in Washington, DC. The plan to build an inner loop expressway by regional and federal transportation authorities began during 1956. Majority of innermost loop has six lanes alongside using eight lanes I-95 highway. The design of loop extensively used cut & cover tunnels so to minimize the impacts on city.
As a result of strong opposition from residents of Washington, DC some of the portions of innermost loop remain incomplete and northern arc remains to be built. The construction of inner loop results in demolition of numerous houses and city neighborhoods hence the loop is not completely built.
