Emancipation Day is celebrated on April 16th to mark the day that had thousands of enslaved persons release from slavery in the District of Columbia nine months before President Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation.
It was the day in history, in the year 1862 to be precise when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act.
