What has been the contribution of the African American population in the history of Washington DC
The city of Washington received a large number of black migrants during the Great Migration from 1910-1930. African Americans migrated from the Southern states to the North, Mid west and Western states to escape racism and unemployment.
Washington DC's unique history is shaped by this strong African-American heritage. Their contribution in education, business and arts remains a testimony to that. The African Americans actively sought out opportunities and became successful teachers, businessmen and leaders.
