
Circumferential Interstate Freeway That Encircles Washington, DC
Capital Beltway is one of the interstate freeways which encircle Washington, DC transient through Maryland and Virginia following Interstate I-495 designation throughout its length of 64 miles.
This circumferential highways plan had began during 1950 that was included into National Interstate Highway System as a result of Federal Aid Highway Act passed in 1956. The construction of this freeway began in 1955 and was opened to public on 17th August, 1964.
Over a period of twenty years the four lanes Beltway was widened to eight lanes, to cope up with vehicular movement and it features 40 interchanges. The traffic volume on Beltway ranges over 225,000 vehicles everyday and studies are conducted to widen the sections to 10 or 12 lanes.
