Which Act finally gave Washington DC the status of being the capital of the United States
In the year 1871 the United States Congress passed an act which was called The District of Columbia Organic Act. This act revoked the individual charters of the cities of Washington and georgetown and the county of Washington and created an altogether new city government for the entire District of Columbia.
The United States Legislation in effect merged the separate municipalities into one single entity and so the city of Washington DC was born. Its legal name though, is District of Columbia.
