Washington D.C. travel can be done by various modes of transport. Cars and buses are some of the options. The Metro is an excellent option when planning to travel around the city. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority runs the bus service and the subway services. Metro services started operations in 1976 and is considered to be amongst the best in the country. It is also said to be an extremely safe subway.

The Metro starts functioning at 5AM on working days and ends at midnight and starts at 7AM when it is a weekend and stops at 3AM. During rush hours on weekdays i.e. from 5 to 9.30 AM and 3 to 7 PM trains arrive every 3-6 minutes. On weekends and on holidays the trains arrive every twelve to fifteen minutes. If there is a paying passenger up to two kids below the age of five are permitted to travel for free.

Travel in Washington D.C. can be quite convenient with the Metro rail. The starting fare at the Metro rail is $1.35. The fare would vary according to the time of travel and the distance. The cost would be more when travelling at peak hours. You can buy the ticket easily from Farecard machines wherein coins and currency notes of 1,5,10 and 20 dollars are accepted. Credit cards are also accepted in the newer machines. Passes for a day or a week can also be purchased in advance.

The SmarTrip card is also a great way to travel. The card deducts the fare value from the card on each ride. This surely is a convenient method.
