By Car

Want to go sightseeing in Washington D.C.? Travelling by car can be considered as a option. The traffic in Washington is likely to hamper the fun of the travel and it would be better to use public transport instead. But for those who wish to have the freedom of having their own private vehicle, a car would be suitable. Hiring a taxi can also be considered for the purpose. You can avoid the driving bit especially in peak hours. The rush hours traffic is not something which any visitor would like to experience. The travails of driving during this time should be avoided as far as possible.

Unless you are familiar with the routes, avoid driving alone. Opt for a Washington travel guide and car travel can be undertaken if you get someone who knows the streets and traffic of Washington well. Even residents of the place take maps along with them while travelling by car. The traffic signals can also play havoc as not all of them are hung in the centre of the road. Some are on the side and this may confuse a visitor.

Car rental is also another option. During weekdays Washington travels can be quite difficult and car rentals charge at about $40. For weekends they start at around $22. At this rate you would get an economy car with automatic transmission and air conditioning. Tax on the car rentals would be extra.

While travelling by road to and in Washington D.C be sure that you know all the emergency numbers to contact police, the highway patrol and fire services. You also need to know about the nearest gas stations. Parking rules should be understood well. The police don't take much time to tow away the vehicles. Understand the rules of the road and remember to follow it. If you do so travel by car in the capital city should be an enjoyable affair.
