Basilica Of The National Shrine Of The Immaculate Conception

If you are planning to travel in Washington DC, it becomes mandatory to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is one of the 10 largest churches in the world and is the largest Roman Catholic Church in the United States and North America, located in Washington D.C.

This is one of the tallest buildings in Washington D.C. It is a place of pilgrimage, worship, reconciliation and evangelization. It is regarded as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary as Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Patroness of the United States.

The Basilica has been visited by Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI. The Basilica is opened throughout the year and offers five hours of confession and faithful six masses daily. The Basilica also offers a cafeteria, a catholic book store, a catholic gift shop, and guided tours for the pilgrims and visitors. Throughout the year and on Holy Days, devotions, special masses, concerts and pilgrimages occur on a regular basis.

The architecture of the Basilica is of Romanesque-Byzantine style and its construction is entirely of mortar, brick, tile, and stone-without steel structural beams, columns or framework. The massive size, piers, arches, thick walls, ornamented ambulatories, towers and groin vaults define the exclusive Romanesque architecture. The dome of the Basilica features the Byzantine architecture, which is an elliptical or a circular dome placed over a rectangular or a square room with the help of pendentives. This triangular masterpiece construction strengthens and supports the base that holds the dome.

You can find detailed information about the Basilica through the internet or you can buy a Washington DC travel information guide also.
