Arena Stage

Arena Stage is a theater production company situated in the Southwest Washington DC. Currently Arena Stage is undergoing a refurbishment process. Before this reconstruction, the arena used to consist of three stages- the Finchandler Stage, surrounding the theater with seating for 650 people, the Kreeger Theater, an open air stage with a capacity to seat around 500 people and the Old Vat Room which was a small performance space.

The theater company was founded in the year 1950 and the Hippodrome Theater, a former movie house, was its first address. The company moved to its present location in 1960; after the gymnasium they were using was broken down to make the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge and the Kennedy Center.

Zelda Finchandler, one of the co founders was also the artistic director right from the initial founding years till the end of the 1990/ 1991 season. Arena Stage is one of the first non profit theaters in the United States and lead the way in the regional theater movement. Regional or resident theaters are professional or semi professional not for profit theater companies based in the United States that produce their own seasons.
